For her first solo exhibition at Upfor, Brenda Mallory presents new sculptures and prints exploring ideas of reclamation and reformation. Often taking relatively simple components and combining them into complex wholes, she employs different materials across multiple iterations of a form. “For example,” Mallory explains, “I created a piece from rubber drive belts, then used that as a mold to create a similar object in cast paper, and yet another in cast glass.” Mallory’s unorthodox materials and processes often result from seeking new uses for discarded materials. Based in Portland, Mallory is a member of the Cherokee Nation and is a recipient of a 2018 Ucross Fellowship for Native American Artists.
