First Friday Reception: May 2nd, 6-9pm
Portland photographer Chris Bennett presents his new series Broken Cinema. “I begin by clicking the shutter of my camera, intuitively capturing the patterns of light and shadow, creating places and things seemingly lost in time. Over the years I have called many of these places home and they became part of who I am today. They are now engrained in my past and memory, the only physical visual evidence left of them is through my photographs. I remember them, dark, mysterious, and isolated. They are my private internal response to my external experience, moving across lonely unpopulated American landscapes, which reverberate melancholy.”
Born in Lafayette Indiana, Bennett graduated with a BFA in Photography and minor in Art History from Indiana University. He served as an intern at the George Eastman House and as a course assistant at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. Bennett also has worked at Photo-Eye Books and Gallery, and independent photography publishing house, and has worked for various commercial photography studios in Chicago, Santa Fe and Portland. He is the Founder and current Executive Director of Newspace Center for Photography.
